Journal Writing Topic

Grade two students,
What am I?

I am round and I am small,

but i'm not a ball at all.

My outside you throw away.

What fruit am I? Can you say?

As a journal entry, write down which fruit you think it is and prove your answer with words that are used in the poem. Also in a few sentences tell me if you like or dislike this fruit and why?

Math- Learning about Polygons

Dear Parents/ Guardians:

Our grade two class have been learning about polygons in math. Polygons are described as closed shapes with only straight sides. Polygons have different names depending on the number of sides they have. Encourage your child to talk about the number of sides each polygon has on the examples provided on your top left corner of this message.

Math Assignment on Symmetry

Hello parents and students.

In grade two, we continue to learn about symmetry. As part of your math homework you are asked to look for eight things that are symmetrical then draw and label them in your math homework. Remember to draw the lines of symmetry on every thing that you use!

This assignment is due on Friday May 7, 2010.

Things to Do this Easter Weekend in Toronto

Hooray!! It's a long weekend with nice weather on the way and plenty of fun things to do. Friday is a holiday, but many Toronto attractions are still open, like the ROM and the Ontario Science Center, so take advantage of the day off and explore what's new. Easter Sunday is the main event and there are egg hunts, activities and more happening all over the city. Find eggs and eat them too this weekend.

I have included some information about what you will find in each website provided.

1. In Math Playground, math concepts are taught through video games, word problems, and puzzles.
2. ABCya, is a new way for elementary students to learn through educational games and activities. The activities are modeled from primary grade lessons and enhanced to provide an interactive way to learn.
3. Math Cats encourages a playful exploration and a better understanding of mathematics. The Math Cats make math fun through a whole range of exercises that use colorful illustrations to teach sophisticated concepts. Children have fun with fractions, place values, story problems and much more.
4. Math is Fun is aimed at basic math skills. However you can find all kinds of activities ranging from simple to more complex. This site also has many K-12 math concepts explained in easy language, plus puzzles, games and worksheets.
5. Math dictionary is an animated, interactive dictionary for students, which explains over 500 common mathematical terms in an understandable language. Every definition is accompanied by interactive exercise, practices and other activities that allow you to practice with the new term.
6. ReviseWise Math includes interactive activities, factsheets, tests, and worksheets. You can get your head around addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, take a visit to Gere’s Bike Shop and help them read their graphs and charts, take a look at time, mass and capacity, investigate the properties of different shapes, and more.
7. MathWorld is an excellent site for mathematics. It is a comprehensive and interactive encyclopedia for students.
8. In Mathematical math you will learn basic number concepts.
9. Meet the Cybersquad characters. You will find Math challenges in the form of games or puzzles related to specific episodes.
10. In Aunty Math, it presents math challenges to help learners become better problem solvers.
11. Cool Math Sites has many useful activities for algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics and probability, and many more.

Science Interactive Activites that will Help your Children Understand Better what they are Learning In School

Students, I have included a few science websites that you can explore from home to understand more about a concept that you are learning in school. I have bolded concepts that you will learn more about when visiting the site.

1. Energy Quest is a highly-interactive site that teaches students topics related to matter.
2. Planet Science is a great place to find games, experiments, and news.
3. Strange Matter helps students in grades 5 to 8 discover the secrets of Materials Science.
4. In the National Geographic Kids, students can visit this site to explore animals and their habitats from all over the world.
5. EcoKids was designed for children, parents, and educators to learn about the environment through fun, educational games and activities.
6. Get Body Smart is a fully animated and interactive eBook about human anatomy and physiology.
7. Kids Planet demonstrates ways to protect animals and plants.
   Environmental Kids Club helps students explore the environment and learn how to protect it using games, pictures, and stories. This site offers information on air, water, recycling, plants and animals, and much more.
8. Science News for Kids is a web site devoted to science news for children of ages 9 to 14. It offers suggestions for hands-on activities, books, articles, Web resources, and other useful materials.
9. StarChild is a site for children to learn about the universe, our solar system, and other space subjects. You can learn how to become an astronaut, about spacesuits, and the history of space travel.
10. Global Warming Kids Site provides a wealth of materials focusing on the science and impacts of global warming or climate change, and on actions that help address global warming issues.
11. Biology4kids is A site designed to serve as an introduction to the science of biology. You can learn about cells, microorganisms, plants, vertebrates, invertebrates, and animal systems.
